Irvine is the sixth largest city in Orange County based on population. Consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the nation, in 2015 Irvine again had the lowest violent crime rate of any U.S. city with a population larger than 100,000 according to the FBI. Located in the south/central portion of Orange County, approximately 40 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, and six miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, Irvine is part of the former 68,000-acres ranch assembled by James Irvine in 1896. Ranch ownership passed to Irvine Company, which subsequently created the nation’s largest master-planned urban environment. The City of Irvine was incorporated in 1971, and presently contains 42.8 square miles. Development within city boundaries began in 1965, and the city now includes over 83,900 homes and apartments, as well as office, industrial and retail developments. With 44 miles of bike trails, 20,000 acres of parks and preserves and the beach a short drive away, Irvine was recently ranked as the sixth best place to live among small cities in America by Money magazine.
